SUBJECT: Orange Micro announces the world’s first USB 2.0 web cam

Anaheim, CA –USB 1.1 web cams are very popular, but they have always had a significant drawback—throughput. The current USB 1.1 is only 12 megabits per second, and that’s a huge problem if you are trying to do 30 frames per second, or full sized pictures (640 x 480 resolution), or full color. Compression helps a little, but in the end, you sacrifice quality.

Enter the iBOT2. The world’s first USB 2.0 based web cam from Orange Micro. It has 40 times the throughput as today’s USB 1.1 web cams. The iBOT2 runs at 30 frames per second, 640 x 480 resolution, millions of colors uncompressed and all at the same time. The quality of iBOT video is a quantum leap over current USB 1.1 web cams because of a 4000% increase in bandwidth.

Orange Micro iBOT2

The iBOT2 comes with a 6-foot cable and some bundles include a free, 2 port USB 2.0 PCI card for desktop PC’s. If users require a USB 2.0 CardBus for a laptop, or prefer a USB 2.0/FireWire Combo PCI Card, they may return the PCI Board for a $20 coupon against an Orange Micro USB 2.0 product of their choice.

The iBOT2 also comes with basic software for video conferencing, live video web streaming, video editing to make small movies, and photo editing. It will also ship with USB 2.0 drivers for Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, and XP.

The iBOT2 will have a manufacturer’s list price of $99. It will ship in April.
